This is our material for Sunday worship. Some people use this web page directly. Most of us use this material together over zoom at 10am (details below). There are also many other churches streaming Sunday worship. Here’s a list.

Before we start…

We invite you to join the live zoom service at 10am. You can also access the zoom service with a phone via the dial in service. Call 0131 460 1196 and enter the following numbers:

Sunday 21 March

Welcome and Introduction (Glen)

Good Morning. A warm welcome to all of you joining our service on this 5th Sunday of Lent – whether by Zoom, phone, paper copy or later on the Website.

My name is Glen and I will be leading. As always, thank you to everyone contributing today – Paul, our Zoom host, Helen, Val, & Cath for songs, Helen for Intercessions, David, our reader and Tom, our Vicar who is preaching.

I have had a preview of Tom’s sermon and as we look forward in hope and expectation to Easter; to meeting in person together again and exploring new or different ways of being Church and reaching outwards, I am excited to hear what he will say.

Let’s now quieten our minds as we prepare our hearts for worship.

Let’s us remember that we worship God who created the world; God who spoke through his prophets & led his people from captivity to liberty; whose Son healed the sick, fed the hungry, gave His life for us and sent His Spirit to guide us. This same God desires all people to be drawn to His love and grace, to know His forgiveness and the joy of his salvation.

Let’s join together in worship and praise as we sing “O Worship the King all glorious above”.

Song (Helen / Cath / Val)

O Worship the King All Glorious Above:

Prayer of Praise and Thanks (Glen)

Father God, we praise and thank you for those who have put their trust in you and remained faithful, even in difficult times. We praise and thank you for those who, through the centuries, lit the fires of faith; for those who have spoken your word and brought your love to others; for those who told us the story of Jesus & whose lives shine with the joy of his presence. Thank you that you call us to be your faithful people in this generation; not behind the closed doors of Church but wherever we are. Make us ready to explore new ways of sharing faith and discovering fresh expressions of being Church today. In Jesus’ name.

Confession (Glen)

We come now to a time of Confession and pause to think of the things we are sorry for.

Father God, we ask your forgiveness for those things we have said and done which have caused you sadness – and for not doing or saying those which would have brought you joy. In both we have failed ourselves and you. We are sorry Lord, and ask you to bring us back to the cross – to renew our commitment to love you and our neighbour.

Absolution (Tom)

Almighty God,
who forgives all who truly repent,
have mercy upon you,
pardon and deliver you from all your sins,
confirm and strengthen you in all goodness,
and keep you in life eternal;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Birthdays (Glen)

Today we celebrate the Birthdays of:

Fiona – Happy Birthday today.
Audrey – Happy Birthday tomorrow.
Abigail – Happy Birthday for Thursday.

Anyone else? Please wave.

Father God, thank you for our friends. We ask that you bless each one on their Birthday and in the coming year. May they know your presence and draw closer to you. In Jesus’ name.

Let’s worship God in song again.

Medley (Helen / Cath / Val)

Is He Worthy?

Hope of the Nations

In the Beauty of Holiness

Readings (David)

Jeremiah 31:31-34, John 12:20-33.

Sermon (Tom)

Let’s pray for Tom as he comes to bring your message for us today (transcript).

Dear Lord, we thank you for Tom – for his dedication to Greenside Parish, Chopwell and the Deanery. We ask you to bless him as he shares with us now. May we hear, through the words you have given him, all that you wish to say to us.

During the sermon we will watch a video from the Christians Against Poverty website.

As we ponder on what we have heard let’s pray.

Lord God, in covenants old and new you have held your arms open to your people. On the Cross, in Jesus, you held your arms open to the world.

Our God, incarnate, crucified and risen, we thank you for all you have sacrificed to welcome us. Help us to receive and embrace others in the welcome that comes from you. We pray in the name of Jesus and in the power of the Holy Spirit.

Song (Helen / Cath / Val)

Beauty For Brokenness

Collect (Glen)

Gracious Father,
you gave up your Son
out of love for the world:
lead us to ponder the mysteries of his passion,
that we may know eternal peace
through the shedding of our Saviour’s blood,
Jesus Christ our Lord.

Intercessions (Helen)

Helen will now bring us our Intercessions (transcript).

Lord’s Prayer

And we gather all our prayers together as one:
Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation
but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power,
and the glory are yours
now and for ever.

The Peace (Glen)

Let’s us now share together in the Peace. May the peace of the Lord be with us all.
