This is our material for Sunday worship. Some people use this web page directly. Most of us use this material together over zoom at 10am (details below). There are also many other churches streaming Sunday worship. Here’s a list.

Before we start…

We invite you to join the live zoom service at 10am. You can also access the zoom service with a phone via the dial in service. Call 0131 460 1196 and enter the following numbers:

Sunday 27 December

This week, Simon leads us, Berni is preaching, Helen is on intercessions, Doreen is reading and Kirsty has picked out the music. Paul is doing hosting us all via zoom.

Introduction (Simon)

A warm and festive welcome to everyone. I hope you’ve had a wonderful time to celebrate, to eat and share time with people you love and care for. And in that find something of the love of God for you, and the love of God that he want us to share with others.

We’re possibly still all full of the Christmas trimmings and feeling tiered after the hectic preparation. Some preparations feeling very familiar like putting up a tree and writing cards, while others feel new and difficult like posting gifts or arranging video calls. It has certainly been a Christmas like no other, but we have witnessed great kindness and caring, outpourings of generosity to foodbanks and places cooking meals for those in need, we’ve seen understanding of how to protect the vulnerable, and great strength of character by carrying on, with ingenuity, resourcefulness and compassion. We have seen healing, prayer on a massive scale, as well as inward reflection and new vision for how society see community.

There is surely much to be thankful for, and in these odd few days we have every year, just after Christmas and before new year, when we can feel a bit lost, not knowing what day it is, when the bins go out, or if the shops are open or not. For some the whole of this year has been like this. But really every Christmas is different, different people we spend it with, different messages of love, and different challenges.

This morning we have some different songs and some we know so well. As the good news of Christ is shared afresh in new and different ways.

Our music this morning has been chosen for us by Kirsty…

Song (Kirsty / Simon)

Calypso Carol

Confession (Simon)

We now come to a time of Confession. Please say these words in your heart and say aloud the words in bold.

Christ the light of the world has come to dispel the darkness of our hearts.
In his light, let us examine ourselves and confess our sins

Silence is kept

Lord of grace and truth,
We confess our unworthiness
To stand in our presence as your children.
We have sinned:
Forgive us and heal us

The Virgin Mary accepted your call
To be the mother of Jesus
Forgive our disobedience to your will
We have sinned:
Forgive us and heal us

Your son our Saviour
Was born in poverty in a manager.
Forgive our greed and rejection of your ways.
We have sinned:
Forgive us and heal us

The shepherds left their flocks
To go to Bethlehem
Forgive us our self-interests and lack of vision.
We have sinned:
Forgive us and heal us

The wise men followed the star
To find Jesus the king.
Forgive our reluctance to seek you.
We have sinned:
Forgive us and heal us

Absolution (Randy)

May the God of love and power forgive you and free you from your sins, heal and strengthen you by his Spirit, and raise you to new life in Christ our Lord.

Birthdays (Simon)

Today we celebrate Dee’s birthday. We thank you God for Dee and pray her journey with you grows in adventure and peace and depth. And for all those who have birthdays close to the birthday of Christ, that they know they are, celebrated for their unique individuality. Made in the image of God.

Medley (Kirsty / Simon)

Joy has dawned

Happy Day

Collect (Simon)

Merciful Lord,
Cast your bright beams of light upon the Church:
that, being enlightened by the teaching
of your blessed apostle and evangelist Saint John,
we may so walk in the light of your truth
that we may at last attain to the light of everlasting life;
through Jesus Christ your incarnate Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.

Readings (Doreen)

Doreen has our readings for today, from Isaiah 61:10-62:3, Galatians 3:23-25,4:4-7 and John 1:1-18. (Recordings by, though, because that’s how the rota worked out.)

Sermon (Berni)

Berni is bringing us the word today, (transcript). Let us pray together for Berni, hold your hands out if you like.

We pray the light Jesus has filled Berni in his preparation, prepare in us a heart to receive all that this light revels.

The Peace (Everyone)

Almighty God,
From whom all thoughts of truth and peace proceed:
Kindle, we pray, in the hearts of all, the true love of peace and guide with your pure and peaceable wisdom those who take counsel for the nations of the earth that in tranquillity your kingdom may go forward, till the earth is filled with the knowledge of your love; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord.

The peace of the Lord be always with you. Let us offer one another a sign of peace.

Song (Kirsty / Simon)

Come All Ye Faithful

Intercessions (Helen)

Helen will now lead us in our Intercessions (transcript).

And we join together to pray the prayer Jesus gave us, the Lord’s Prayer:
Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation
but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power,
and the glory are yours
now and for ever.

Song (Kirsty / Simon)

The Blessing

Conclusion (Randy / Rosemary)

Christ, who by his incarnation gathered into one
things earthly and heavenly,
fill you with peace and goodwill
and make you partakers of the divine nature;
and the blessing of God almighty,
the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit,
be among you and remain with you always.

Go in peace to love and serve the Lord.
In the name of Christ. Amen.
