Before we start…

We invite you to join the live zoom service at 10am. You can also access the zoom service with a phone via the dial in service. Call 0131 460 1196 and enter the following numbers:

Sunday 28 March – Palm Sunday

Welcome and Introduction (Gloria)

WECOME to our service this morning some of which has been pre-recorded in order that all may have the opportunity to join our worship. My name is Gloria, and I will be leading the service this morning.

We look with expectant hearts to what will be revealed during our time together this morning whether you have joined us on zoom or the web. We remember those who only have access to the service via a paper copy – we pray they may be blessed as they read the scriptures, Randy’s message and pray the intercessions Val has prepared.

Holy Week begins with Palm Sunday when the church remembers the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem. The Gospels tell us that Jesus and his disciples had gone up to Jerusalem to celebrate the Passover, and that when he journeyed to the city, the crowds gave him a rapturous welcome, throwing palm fronds and some their cloaks representing kingship, into his path.

On this day churches worldwide will distribute crosses made from palm fronds in memory of Jesus’ arrival in Jerusalem. In many churches there is a solemn procession with palms prior to the most holy week in the church’s year. Unfortunately, because of Covid restrictions we are unable to do so. You can, if you wish, parade around your living room!

Let’s take a moment to be quiet whilst you hold up your palm cross for the following prayer and blessing:

Hosanna to the Son of David, the King of Israel.
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest.
Hosanna to the Son of David.
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

Blessing of Palm Crosses (Randy)

Hold up your crosses for Randy to bless

God our Saviour, whose Son Jesus Christ entered Jerusalem as Messiah to suffer and to die; let these palms be for us signs of his victory and grant that we who bear them in his name may ever hail him as our King and follow him in the way that leads to eternal life; who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of Christ.

Song (Kirsty / Gloria)

Jesus enters Jerusalem as a humble King and gentle Messiah, he is greeted joyfully by the crowds. As we sing our first song this morning GIVE THANKS TO THE LORD and wave our Palm Crosses, let us remember we are joyfully greeting and praising Jesus.

Forever: Give Thanks To The Lord

Prayer (Gloria)

Jesus you rode into your city on this day, receiving the shouts and the welcome of many. Come into your church today, to be among your people, receive our welcome and our acclaim. Lord we pray that these crosses be a constant reminder of your very precious love for each one of us.

Confession (Gloria)

We get the opportunity now to turn to Father God to confess those occasions when in our weakness we have chosen our selfish ways maybe hurting others in the process. Quietly we confess our failures, all those things we have done or thought or said, lay them all before God and say we repent and are sorry. Let’s say together:

Lord God,
we have sinned against you;
we have done evil in your sight.
We are sorry and repent.
Have mercy on us according to your love.
Wash away our wrongdoing and cleanse us from our sin.
Renew a right spirit within us
and restore us to the joy of your salvation,
through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Absolution (Randy)

May the Father of all mercies
cleanse you from your sins,
and restore you in his image
to the praise and glory of his name,
through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Birthdays (Gloria)

I understand there are 2 birthdays to celebrate this coming week Janet Bertola 30 March & Julie Brazier 2 April. If anyone else is celebrating please wave your hand and Simon will scan all to check.

Father we thank you for Janet and Julie as they each celebrate their birthday this coming week. May it be a wonderful day. Thank you for how special they are, in their different ways, as part of our church family.

Jesus, we pray that this year may be one of great joy as they grow closer in their relationship with you. Please bless both. We extend a blessing to anyone else we know who has a birthday this week.

Medley (Kirsty / Gloria)

O For A Thousand Tongues To Sing

To God Be The Glory

Let Everything That Has Breath

Readings (Dennis)

Dennis is bringing our readings this morning from Psalm 118:19-24, Philippians 2:5-11 and Mark 11: 1-11.

Sermon (Randy)

Randy is going to share with us some challenges and thoughts from those scriptures. He told me the title which sounds intriguing. I am really looking forward to listening (transcript).

Let’s pray for Randy:

Father God we thank you for Randy for his time spent with you in preparation for this talk, bringing to us that which you have laid on his heart in respect of your Word. Help us as we listen to have a better understanding of the love you poured out for each one of us, the sacrifice you paid on the cross. We pray that your Word, your love, may take root in our hearts. May the Lord bless our hearts to receive.

Thank you Randy.

We pray now as we go through this coming week that we may have the courage to live by your Word Jesus. When our faith falters, as it often does, may we hear your gentle voice saying to us ‘courage’ do not be afraid I am with you always.

Song (Kirsty / Gloria)

The Peace (Gloria)

We join together to share The Peace.

May the peace of God, which passes all understanding, keep our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.

The peace of the Lord be always with you.

I pray that very soon we will be able to join together in one of our church buildings to share the Peace.

Let’s continue with our service.

Collect (Gloria)

Almighty and everlasting God, who in your tender love towards the human race,
sent your Son our Saviour Jesus Christ to take upon him our flesh and to suffer death upon the cross:
grant that we may follow the example of his patience and humility,
and also be made partakers of his resurrection;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.

Intercessions (Val)

Val is now going to lead us in our intercessions and the Lord’s Prayer. Thank you Val for bringing on behalf of us all, those issues of need to our Father (transcript).

Lord’s Prayer (Val)

And we gather all our prayers together as one:
Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation
but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power,
and the glory are yours
now and for ever.

Conclusion and Notices

Before we make our coffee etc and go into breakout rooms to have a catch up with each other, I am going to invite Dawn to say a few words about our Prayer Ministry.

For those wishing to have a time of prayer ministry, thanks to technology, a link will now be coming through on the chat window. This will give you the opportunity to go directly from this service to the Prayer Ministry waiting room. Please be patient whilst you wait until you are allowed access as someone may be ahead of you. However, the link is still available from the weekly service notification you receive from Paddy.

Holy Week Services: You will also have received the relevant link for our Holy Week services. We will journey with Jesus through all the happenings of the Passion beginning this evening at 6pm with the Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem. Note Mon/Tues/Wed services begin at 7.30pm, ending the week with our Good Friday service at 2pm. We join our friends from Chopwell for the Maundy Thursday service at 7.30pm.

Song (Kirsty / Gloria)

Blessing and Dismissal (Randy / Rosemary)

May the Father,
who so loved the world that he gave his only Son,
bring you by faith to his eternal life.

May Christ,
who accepted the cup of sacrifice
in obedience to the Father’s will,
keep you steadfast as you walk with him the way of his cross.

May the Spirit,
who strengthens us to suffer with Christ
that we may share his glory,
set your minds on life and peace.

And the blessing of God almighty,
the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit,
be among you and remain with you always.

Go in peace to love and serve the Lord.
In the name of Christ. Amen.

Thank you to all who have contributed and participated in this service – seen and unseen – may you be richly blessed.
