St John's Greenside is open to all, for quiet reflection and prayer during the week from Mon to Fri: 9.30am - 3.30pm.
Greenside Parish is seeking your support for a major capital project to renovate and protect the front elevation of the Church of the Holy Spirit, in Durham Diocese. This work is essential to secure the building fabric, prevent further deterioration, and restore the church’s positive contribution to Crawcrook Main Street.
Six years ago, a large slate slipped from the church’s frontage and was safely caught by the cross. As a precaution, all slate cladding was removed. Now the exposed brickwork is porous, poorly pointed and lacking weatherproofing. Moisture penetrates the masonry, accelerating deterioration and the risk of increased future repair costs.
Our church frontage is a prominent feature on Crawcrook Main Street, where some buildings have visibly declined. Repair and renovation is not only essential capital work to prevent further water ingress and protect the building’s long term sustainability, but also to maintain the church’s visual contribution to the village.
Our Church Members are having a Gift Day on 11 October 2026, with letters and envelopes distributed to every church member and grant applications are being made to several potential funders.

PS This is the largest financial project the parish has ever undertaken, and every contribution, large or small, is gratefully received. The church itself was built 60 years ago through donations of £1 and upwards. It all counts. Together we can do this.

Have you ever experienced an evening Compline service, followed by Holy Communion?
We warmly invite you to this 6pm service at St John's Church, Greenside, held on the 4th Sunday of the month. Compline is led by different church members, followed by Holy Communion. A Compline service helps us to place ourselves into God’s care for the night ahead and to reflect on the day with thanksgiving and peace in our hearts and minds.
Footprints - Baby and Toddler group
Come along to meet other mums, dads and carers with their babies and toddlers.
Thursday 9.30am - 11am, during term time at St John's Community Hall.
Open to all. £1 per family.
