St John's Greenside is open to all, for quiet reflection and prayer during the week from Mon to Fri: 9.30am - 3.30pm.
You don’t have to grieve alone
In times of loss, the Church of England in Gateshead offers gentle, practical care, from funerals that honour a life, to bereavement support and someone simply willing to listen. Many churches are open as quiet, safe spaces to remember loved ones, light a candle, or sit in peace, whether your loss is recent or long ago.
Some churches offer bereavement support groups, and opportunities to gather with others at an All Souls’ service each November. We also recognise how grief can feel sharper at Christmas. Many churches hold Blue Christmas or Longest Night services — spaces to name sorrow, share stories, and find hope together. If you are struggling with loss — or know someone who is — you are always welcome to get in touch, or simply come and sit.
No one in Gateshead should have to grieve alone.
Here in Greenside Parish we offer you a quiet space to remember your loved ones. In Crawcrook, there’s a lovely garden behind Church of the Holy Spirit where you can rest awhile. In Greenside you are welcome to come into St John's Church, which is usually open during the day.
Each November, we invite you to our Memorial Service held at St John's Church in Greenside, to join in song and light a candle in memory of your loved ones.
We also aim to make our funeral ministry personal for each family involved.
'Free to Be' Service, followed by Eucharist
May we warmly invite you to our monthly 6pm service held at St John's Church, Greenside on the 2nd Sunday of the month. It's a time to quietly rest in God, followed by Holy Communion.
Service of Compline, followed by Eucharist
Have you ever experienced an evening Compline service, followed by Holy Communion?
We warmly invite you to this 6pm service at St John's Church, Greenside, held on the 4th Sunday of the month. Compline is led by different church members, followed by Holy Communion. A Compline service helps us to place ourselves into God’s care for the night ahead and to reflect on the day with thanksgiving and peace in our hearts and minds.
